A preferred orientation correction of schistose minerals quantitative analysis via X-ray diffraction

X-ray diffraction (XRDS) is a crucial analytical technique for the quantitative determination of mineral content. However, the prevalent occurrence of preferred orientation in schistose minerals presents a significant challenge to accurate quantitative analysis. To address this issue, a mathematical correction model was developed to mitigate the impact of preferred orientation, significantly enhancing its accuracy. This correction involves applying a multiplicity factor to selected planes and maintaining consistency across the total number of planes under both preferred and non-preferred orientation conditions. Calcite (CaCO3 ) and dolomite (CaMg(CO3 )2 ), two common calcium-containing minerals with known preferred orientations and relatively simple structures, were employed to test and validate the model. Following the application of the correction, the results demonstrated errors of less than 1.56 wt%, thereby ensuring accuracy and reliability. This method effectively addresses the challenge of preferred orientation in minerals, enhancing the precision and dependability of quantitative mineral analysis.
