Trading off the biogas upgrading and pollution reduction by malt sprout derived biochar addition on anaerobic treatment of brewery wastewater

Demands of high energy in wastewater treatment plant and water pollution due to grey water made the situation from bad to worse. Therefore, simultaneous removal of pollutant and fulfil the energy demand compel to carry out the current study. This study represented a trade-off between biogas upgrading and pollution removal by anaerobic co-digestion of brewery wastewater and malt sprout derived biochar. This study majorly aimed to define the effect of malt sprout derived biochar addition on anaerobic treatment performance of brewery wastewater in terms of grey water footprint (GWF) reduction and biogas upgrading. The results showed that chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was enhanced by 2.375 times. Also, the effects of biochar addition on biogas production and content were investigated. Methane (CH4 ) production was improved by 2.48 times in terms of CH4 production yield. In this study, average reduction of GWF was 60.6 % after biochar addition. The addition of biochar upgraded the biogas production by 59.36 %. A new pollution reduction index (PRI B-GWF ) and biogas boosting indicator (BBI ) were developed.
