A one-year field-scale experiment on the daylighting and building thermal performance of thermotropic window in subtropical area

Thermotropic (TT) glazing, which enable dynamic solar modulation through light-scattering behaviors, has great potential to enhance building performance in energy efficiency, visual and thermal comfort. Many researches have been carried out by building performance simulation or short-term laboratory-scale experiments. In this work, a one-year field-scale experiment was conducted in Zhangzhou (a subtropical region of China), to comparatively investigate the indoor daylighting and thermal performance of the TT glazing versus traditional clear glazing. The experimental data throughout the whole year were presented and analyzed. The results shown that: (1) In winter, the test room with TT glazing had 0.66 °C lower average indoor air temperature, 7.71 % higher UDI300-3000 lx , and 7.07 kWh/m2 higher building energy consumption, when compared with reference room with clear glazing. (2) In spring, the test room showed 0.74 °C lower indoor air temperature, 13.93 % UDI300-3000 lx improvement, and 1.04 kWh/m2 increased building energy consumption. (3) In summer, the test room maintained 0.51 °C lower indoor air temperature, 18.43 % UDI300-3000 lx enhancement, and 2.72 kWh/m2 reduction in building energy used. (4) Throughout the year, the UDI300-3000 lx increased by 13.93 % in the test room compared to the reference room. The annual building energy saving rate of the test room was 7.07 %, and it can save 15.16 % of cooling energy consumption throughout the year.
